This lecture course introduces art and design students to the fundamental considerations of how we (and the various power brokers of the day) attribute meaning and value to images in a contemporary global context. What is the role of the maker, the viewer, the funder, the politician, the consumer, the philosopher, the pundit? How do such things as race, class, gender, ideology, and aesthetics influence our ways of understanding not only images but the social and political contexts in which they are produced and viewed. The course considers a broad range of visual forms, including paintings, prints, photographs, film, television, video, advertisements, news reporting, and science images.
Anti-requisite: Students who have taken LBST 1B06 or VISC 1B06 may not take this course for further credit.
