In the Publications Specialization, students will address all areas of book and magazine publishing, both digital and print, from DIY endeavours to academic publishing. Considering publication in its broadest sense as a form of discourse for both personal and collaborative production, students are introduced to the breadth of possibilities in critical, textual and visual publishing. Publications ties together courses from Printmaking, Photography, Integrated Media, and Criticism & Curatorial Practice, and further draws on courses in Graphic Design and Liberal Arts & Sciences. This gives students a true cross-disciplinary experience and unique set of competencies and skills ranging from hybrid and collaborative methodologies to business and entrepreneurial skills that will allow them to succeed in the context of Ontario’s digital and creative economies.
The range of courses fosters a deep engagement with the critique, theory and material and virtual productions that shape today’s evolution of publications and provides students with a map of all stages and forms of publication within which they can then situate themselves.
Students must fulfill all requirements listed in the major program guide the year they were admitted to OCAD U. For example, a student admitted to OCAD U in 2012 must follow the major program guide published in the Fall/Winter 2012/2013 Course Calendar.
Liberal studies courses are listed under Liberal Arts & Sciences and designated by course type LST in the course schedule.
See Liberal Art & Sciences for an outline of the liberal studies degree requirements.
Students who have declared a minor may use undesignated liberal studies distribution courses and up to a 0.5 credit of Art elective courses to fulfill minor course requirements and major course requirements at the same time.
