Communications Programs (Years 2 to 4)
Advertising, Graphic Design, Illustration

In our complex ‘information age’, the need for effective communication has never been greater. Programs in Advertising, Graphic Design and Illustration emphasize the development of simple, insightful and commanding words and images, where the primary focus is on the information or idea to be communicated.

Our faculty consist almost entirely of working professionals from many of Canada’s foremost advertising agencies and design houses, bringing to the classroom, knowledge of current industry standards and directions, as well as passion for their work. A structured curriculum ensures the development of skills to support design studio work, where precise and insightful strategies, compelling concepts and effective visuals are realized.

Proficiency in the English language is critical in all areas of study in the communications disciplines. English comprehension and communication skills are required to successfully complete any of the three programs in Advertising, Graphic Design and Illustration. Students with less than adequate skills in this area are encouraged to supplement their program with assistance offered through the Writing & Learning Centre.

Please refer to the Introduction of New Curriculum.

Illustration

The Illustration program provides students with the fundamentals required to create a unique partnership between pictures and the written word. The visual representation of imagined and existing narratives for corporate, editorial, advertising and web/interactive applications is explored with the clear intent of creating a strong individual and personal voice.

Students work in a variety of media and techniques, both traditional and digital, to effectively express their concepts.

From deeply held personal convictions and the recognition of their own aesthetic, students learn to interpret the relationship between form and content.

Working closely with a faculty composed of practicing illustrators, and with visiting professionals, students develop projects that cover a complete range of illustrative applications.

Illustration Program Guide

Please refer to the Faculty of Design's Degree/Diploma Requirements for information regarding degree and diploma requirements for Design program students.

All Faculty of Design programs are developed as semester groupings of related courses. In order to be best prepared to meet course expectations, students are normally required to complete all core courses in one semester before carrying on to courses in the next semester.

Students must achieve a minimum grade of 60% in their core studio course each semester to advance to the following semester’s core studio. Please refer to course descriptions to identify these courses.

Note: All courses tagged with a “†” require a minimum grade of 60% to advance to the following semester’s core studio.
